To prewire or to not prewire? That is the age-old question. If you are in the process of building your dream house, you may be asking yourself this very same question. Do your future self a favor and opt for prewiring your house. Although there is some upfront cost of getting your house prewired for alarm, camera, audio and internet access points, you will be thankful you did this down the road.
So, what are the advantages of prewiring your house?
First off, it is crucial to think about the future of your home and what that could look like. What may not seem important now, could be very important in the future. Running these wires in the construction phase will help future proof your house. For example, one of our clients building their dream home in South Surrey was advised to run a few extra wires in conduit to the motorized gate so that in the future if they wanted to install an intercom, it would be easy and more affordable. About a year later, the client reached out to request the installation of an intercom and because we were able to use that existing wiring, the client saved thousands of dollars on the install.

Another advantage of prewiring your house is a nicer finished product. When we run the wires in the framing stage of your build, you eliminate the worry of future exposed wiring. You can also add cameras, monitors or keypads in places that would be impossible to do when the finishing has been completed. At Swift, we always recommend adding a few extra cate5 wires for future proof, these extra wires can be used for additional cameras, Wi-Fi access points or future home automation features. Who knows what cool new features will be available in the future!
